Global Tariff & Currency Inflation Loss Calculator

How the Loss Is Calculated

The direct tariff cost applies the tariff rate and the retail pass-through rate to the imported share of household spending. Currency loss applies an annual debasement rate to total spending and compounds it over the horizon. The two add up to an effective inflation tax rate.

Worked example with the default inputs ($65,000 annual spending, 15% tariff, 78% pass-through, 3 years): direct tariff cost $2,890 a year, currency loss $2,925 a year, total $5,815 a year and $18,317 over the horizon, an effective inflation tax of 8.95%. Cumulative purchasing power lost to currency debasement over the horizon: 12.9%.

Frequently asked questions

How does the tariff inflation loss calculator work?

It applies the tariff rate and the retail pass-through rate to the imported share of household spending, then adds purchasing power lost to an annual currency debasement rate over the chosen number of years.

How much of a tariff is passed on to consumers?

The calculator lets you set the pass-through rate. Its preset scenarios assume between 75% and 88% of the tariff reaches retail prices, depending on the tariff regime.

Which household spending categories are most exposed to tariffs?

Consumer electronics (78% import share) and apparel and footwear (72%) are the most import-dependent categories in the model, followed by home appliances (58%), autos and parts (45%) and packaged food (22%).

What is an effective inflation tax rate?

It is the combined annual loss from tariff pass-through and currency debasement divided by total household spending, expressed as a percentage of the budget.
