GPU Power Distribution Network: 48V to 1V Busbar Converters
Next-generation AI accelerators consume in excess of 1,000 watts per package at operating voltages below 1.0V, driving core currents past 1,000 amperes. Power modeling modules within the xAI Colossus power capex calculator demonstrate why traditional 12V server power planes have been superseded by 48V busbar architectures.
Conduction losses scale with the square of the current (P = I^2 * R). Stepping server rack distribution up to 48V reduces distribution current by a factor of four and resistive copper losses by sixteen-fold. However, converting 48V directly down to 0.8V sub-volt core rails requires ultra-dense multiphase buck or switched-capacitor voltage regulator modules (VRMs).
Vertical power delivery (VPD), which mounts the voltage regulator module directly beneath the GPU die using through-silicon via (TSV) interconnects, eliminates printed circuit board trace resistance and mitigates dangerous transient voltage drops during sudden matrix multiply step loads.
